Elementary School
Third through Fifth Grade
Curriculum
The mission of the elementary school program is to provide students with a positive, well-rounded educational experience that will prepare them for middle school and the years beyond. In grades 3-5, students will continue to build upon their educational foundation through the Core Knowledge curriculum, and broaden their knowledge of world history, geography, current events, science, classic literature, and character development. Students will continue to participate in more advanced technology, foreign language, physical education, music history, and art history enrichments.
A Classical Approach
Students in the elementary program experience a classical approach to learning, and are given opportunities for exploration and inquiry based learning, in order to ensure a strong understanding of subject matter. Smaller classroom sizes, and individualized programming allows for more challenging lessons and detailed exploration of curriculum areas.
Language Arts
The elementary program at KGA strives to give students the tools they need to become successful readers and writers. The Orton Gillingham Phonics First approach is continued in the elementary program, with an emphasis on complex spelling rules and decoding strategies. Vocabulary, grammar, and spelling are also emphasized during the elementary years. Writing is a part of the daily curriculum, and through a variety of teaching methods, students will be immersed in the writing process.
Through the Core Knowledge Curriculum, students will continue to be exposed to a variety of classic literature, including poetry, plays, and familiar favorites such as Alice In Wonderland and Tom Sawyer.
Mathematics
Students continue using the Saxon Math program with an emphasis on building upon the math skills learned in JK-2nd grades. Each lesson includes a review portion, an introductory lesson, and practice lessons that give students the opportunity to use their skills to solve several different types of problems. An emphasis is also placed on test preparation skills.
Bridge to Middle School
An important part of the elementary program is helping students to prepare for middle school. In grades 3-5, students are given guidance and encouragement towards becoming independent, responsible, young people. Lessons teaching time management and organizational skills are incorporated into the daily routine. Study skills and test preparation also become an important part of the curriculum.
Character education is another important part of the elementary program. Through Core Wisdom and Character First, students learn about important traits such as honesty, responsibility, and sincerity; as well as how to apply them to social situations and daily life.
